Located at 118 Burke Street in the heart of Kernersville, this historic industrial property stands as a reminder of the town’s deep manufacturing and textile roots.
Originally constructed in the early 1900s, the building was part of the thriving hosiery and textile industry that helped shape the economy of Kernersville and the greater Piedmont Triad region. Public records trace portions of the facility back to approximately 1918, with expansions and modifications occurring through the 1940s as textile production grew throughout North Carolina.
For many years, the property was associated with Felice Hosiery Co., one of the many hosiery manufacturers that operated in North Carolina during the height of the American textile era. During this period, mills and hosiery plants were the backbone of communities like Kernersville, providing jobs for generations of local families and helping transform the region into one of the nation’s leading textile centers.
The architecture and industrial layout of the building reflect the practical mill design common throughout North Carolina during the first half of the twentieth century with large open manufacturing floors, heavy brick construction, expansive industrial windows, and rail-served accessibility that supported both manufacturing and distribution.
When City Storage acquired the property, great care was taken to preserve the integrity and character of the original structure while thoughtfully repurposing it for modern self-storage use. Rather than demolishing a piece of Kernersville’s history, the goal was to honor the craftsmanship, industry, and community legacy embedded within these walls.
Today, the building continues serving the community in a new way, blending historic preservation with modern functionality. Many of the original industrial features remain intact as a tribute to the generations of workers and businesses that helped build Kernersville’s industrial heritage.
